foot pain

Plantar fasciitis is an extremely common foot condition that affects over 2 million people in the United States. The condition is caused by overuse or excessive stress on the arch and plantar fascia of the foot. If you are experiencing foot pain, difficulty walking or running, and inflammation or stiffness of the foot, Chiro-Med Health Center can help. Here is a look at the symptoms of plantar fasciitis and common treatment methods for plantar fasciitis in Lynchburg, VA.

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is an inflammatory condition that affects the connective tissue that runs across the bottom of each foot, from the heel bone to the toes. This band of connective tissue is called the plantar fascia. While the exact cause of plantar fasciitis is unknown, it typically affects people who are overweight, or who are runners. The plantar fascia supports the arch of the foot and absorbs shock when you run or walk. Repeated tension or pressure on the fascia will cause tears, irritation, and inflammation.

Common Symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis

The most common symptom of plantar fasciitis is a stabbing pain at the bottom of the foot near the heel. The pain increases when walking or running, and is typically worse when you first wake up in the morning or after you have spent a long time standing or sitting. You might also experience pain in the arch of the foot, foot stiffness, swelling around the heel, and a tight Achilles tendon.

Non-Surgical Chiropractic Plantar Fasciitis Treatments

Plantar fasciitis can be treated non-surgically with chiropractic care. Our chiropractors may recommend a combination of different therapies to increase your recovery time and give you the best chance of success. We may suggest massage therapy to relieve pain and inflammation, improve blood flow, and increase flexibility and mobility. We can also recommend exercises and stretches you can do at home to promote healing and reduce pain and stiffness. One of the most effective non-surgical treatment options for plantar fasciitis is custom orthotics. Orthotics are shoe inserts that support the arches, provide extra cushioning, and relieve pressure and shock on the plantar fascia, heel, and arch.
